Replenishment Books

Replenishment is a micropress edited by Pat Lawrence.

The name comes from John Barth's essay "The Literature of Replenishment", in which he describes a model for contemporary novels that navigates between the ultimacies of Modernist formal consciousness and Realist formal naivete. While categorizing literature into periods can sometimes be counterproductive, in this instance this model is a good way to characterize the types of novels Replenisment is looking to publish.

Submission Guidelines:

Because of limited resources and the particular interests of the editor, Replenishment has a narrow focus.
We look for quality fiction in the vein of Ralph Ellison, John Barth, Italo Calvino, Paul Auster, and Samuel Beckett.
Ideal manuscripts would be both purposeful and creative. They would push narrative conventions to their limits but remain engaging stories, taking on both humanist issues and the instability of formal constraints.
They would be situated between the extremes of pure self-conscious formal experimentation and opaque realism.

Please send a few sample chapters or segments. If the novel does not subdivide conveniently, please submit the first twenty or so double-spaced pages. We prefer submissions by email; please query before sending hard copies. We understand this may be necessary with unusually-formatted documents, but feel free to send pdf.s if that would preserve the appearance of your work.
